IN SHORT

The Raising the Floor Consortium is a large consortium of organizations working on the Raising the Floor mission. Core to this mission is the development of the GPII. Raising the Floor - International (RtF-Int'l) is a non-profit association in Geneva Switzerland formed to provide a headquarters and coordination point for the Raising the Floor Consortium. The CLOUD4All project is a large single funded project dedicated to helping build the GPII, as is more recent Prosperity4All. Other key locations at this time are the Trace R&D Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (where RTF and the GPII were first proposed) and the Inclusive Design Research Center (IDRC) at OCAD University where the international team that did much of the seminal work on which the GPII is based. For a full listing of the Raising the Floor Consortium, see the Raising the Floor Consortium Member List.

IN MORE DETAIL

The Raising the Floor CONSORTIUM

The Raising the Floor CONSORTIUM is not a legal entity. Rather it is a group of individuals and organizations that have come together, and are working together to advance the Raising the Floor mission.

  • The Raising the Floor mission: To help make sure that Information and communication technologies (ICT) are accessible and usable to everyone, including people facing access barriers due to literacy, digital literacy, disability or the effects of aging.
  • Of particular concern is making sure that these users are able to access and use the ICT regardless of their economic situation or the economy of their country.
  • One of the core efforts of Consortium is the development of the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII).'
  • Both Raising the Floor-International and CLOUD4All are members of the Raising the Floor Consortium.

Raising the Floor - International (RtF-Int'l)

Raising the Floor - International is an non-profit association in Geneva Switzerland that was created to advance the Raising the Floor mission, and to provide a headquarters and coordination point for the efforts of theRaising the Floor Consortium. Geneva Switzerland was chosen for the location of RtF-Int'l because it was considered the most neutral location in the world for this global effort.

The Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII)

The GPII is a thing, not an organization. Like the Internet, it is an infrastructure that enables other things to occur. And, similar to the way the Internet, Web, and Cloud infrastructures are allowing us to completely reinvent information and communication technologies, the GPII will provide an infrastructure that will allow us to completely re-invent accessibility and personal user interfaces.

  • The Raising the Floor Consortium and RtF-Int'l are both focused on creating the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure.
  • Such an infrastructure will require investment by many countries and organizations in order to come to fruition.

CLOUD4All

CLOUD4All is the name of a large integrated project funded by the European Commission under the seventh framework program (FP7). The project ran from November 2011 till November 2015.

  • CLOUD4All involved 28 partners and collaborators (and growing) from Europe, Canada, and the United States.
  • The purpose of the CLOUD4All project is to help develop and test some of the core components of the GPII.
  • The 28+ organizations that make up the CLOUD4All team are all members of the Raising the Floor Consortium.
  • RtF-Int'l is a member of CLOUD4All team.
  • For more information see http://CLOUD4All.info.
  • To see how CLOUD4All relates to the overall GPII effort see http://gpii.net/CLOUD4All.

Much of the software developed during Cloud4all is available in public source code repositories. Some of these repositories are part of the GPII "organsation" on GitHub, for example:

The other GitHub repositories from the Cloud4all project are listed on the page Cloud4all Components in the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII).

Prosperity4All is a second large integrated project funded by the European Commission under the seventh framework program (FP7).

  • Prosperity4All involves 25 partners and collaborators (and growing) from Europe, Canada, and the United States.
  • The purpose of the Prosperity4All project is to develop key components of the GPII that complete those being worked on in Cloud4All.
  • The 25 organizations that make up the Properity4All team are all members of the Raising the Floor Consortium.
  • RtF-Int'l is a member of Prosperity4All team.
